Unexpected material engagements is a course where we attempted to regard non-humans in a public space. In this project we investigated the pond in front of atlas, assessed its human-centered design, and explored a design intervention which aimed to regard humans and non-humans in the ecosystem. Engaging with more-than-human research in an applied setting helped with understanding the philosophical concepts, we exercised noticing practises and explored the agencies of plant-based materials. The project content of the course felt very far removed from my work. However, when reflecting on it later, I found the theory increasingly related to my exploratory practises in 3D printing. The experiences opened up the door towards more-than-human aspects of my technical prototypes: like agency, intention and materiality in the making process.
