In a designerly perspective on IOT, I’ve worked on the design of a modular messaging system. Where we were presented with the challenges of a modular design, with growing and emergence as main topics. Engaging hands-on with these challenges and enacting/reflecting on parameters of growth of a system was interesting as it surfaced their qualities for interaction as well as their limits in serendipitous possibilities. We constantly found “errors” in configurations of our modules, and as such had to imagine different explanations and communication protocols as we continued. The complexity of the programming and explanation rose significantly with the addition of every module. This prompted me to explore more open-ended approaches to modularity in my further projects.
